VPK FAQs
Florida’s Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) is a free pre-K program for children who live in Florida and turn 4 years old on or before September 1. Families can choose a 540-hour school-year option or a 300-hour summer option, delivered by approved VPK providers statewide. Learn more about Florida VPK.
“Pre-K” is a general term for preschool programs before kindergarten (public or private). “VPK” is Florida’s state-funded, no-cost pre-K for eligible 4-year-olds with defined hours and provider requirements; some centers may also offer non-VPK pre-K or extended-day options
VPK instruction follows the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards (4 Years to Kindergarten) across eight domains: Physical Development, Approaches to Learning, Social & Emotional Development, Language & Literacy, Mathematical Thinking, Scientific Inquiry, Social Studies, and Creative Arts, with an emphasis on early literacy and math and ongoing progress monitoring.
