Blocks Study
Explore a Day
Studies investigate topics that children find interesting. Each study is broken into four, week-long investigations that are fueled by curiosity and teach through play. Let’s see how a day of the Blocks study comes to life in this free sample.
Preparation
This week’s investigation explores two questions: “What types of blocks are there?” and “How are they the same and different?” A video introduction embedded in the Teaching Guide helps teachers prepare.

Large Group
Large group is a great time to review the question of the day and get children thinking about the investigation questions. The Teaching Guide suggests using Mighty Minutes 304 to start a discussion about what we mean by “different” and “the same.”

Choice Time
Teachers can build on the day’s concepts by rotating new materials into the interest areas for choice time. Today, this includes blocks of different weights and materials
and a balance scale.

Read-Aloud
As teachers read the book Neighborhood Song—or any book about community from their library—to the class, the Read-Aloud Strategy Card shares strategies for what to do before, during, and after reading aloud.

Small Group: Mathematics
Small-group time alternates between math and language & literacy skills daily to ensure a balance for every child. Today’s Intentional Teaching Experience, “Sorting & Classifying,” includes a video from a real-world classroom.

Additional Small Group:
Language & Literacy
Additional small-group activities focused on the complementary subject area offer extra skill development for 4- and 5-year-olds. Today, children name and trace the letters on alphabet cards. A video shows teachers how.

Large-Group Roundup
Teachers wrap up the day with a class reflection, prompting children to talk about the blocks they explored and add new words to the “How to Describe Blocks” chart.
