Last spring, a four month pilot study was conducted at The Child Care and Learning Center (CCLC) in Rappahannock County, VA, to explore the effectiveness of teachers using The Creative Curriculum for Infants, Toddlers & Twos and LENA Grow™ to provide high-quality experiences for positive child outcomes and increased language interactions between children and their caregivers.

Our study found an average increase of nearly 1100 adult words spoken per day and an average increase of 59 more conversational turns, increasing the overall amount of interactive talk in these two participating classrooms, which included 14 children. Research shows that the more spoken language children experience during the first 2-3 years of life the better their brain develops cognitively and social-emotionally. Increasing the number of words a child hears and responds to can help close the word gaps that affect a child’s readiness for school.

It made me more aware of what and how I communicated with the children.

If it wasn’t for LENA I wouldn’t have picked up that one of my students didn’t communicate as much as the others. I am thrilled to know how I can make a difference with what I’ve learned through this program.
