Architecture Study
Studies investigate topics that children find interesting. Each study is broken into four investigations that are fueled by curiosity and teach through play. Let’s see how a day of the Architecture Study comes to life in this free sample.
Preparation
This week’s investigation explores the question, “What architectural features are inside and outside of a building?” To help teachers prepare for the investigation, the Teaching Guide includes a video introduction.

Focused Project Learning
Each day begins with gathering children as a group. Use Mighty Minutes 129, ‘Growing Stories,’ to transition children to the large-group setting. Then, start a discussion about openings in your classroom, such as doors and windows, before taking the children on a walk inside your school to look for openings in the walls and ceilings. As they discover windows and doors, encourage them to measure them and then discuss them together.
Choice Time
During choice time, children explore the day’s concepts. Invite them to build structures with blocks and add walls, doors, and windows. Guidance for multilingual classrooms encourages teachers to describe children’s actions aloud to further support English language development.
Read-Aloud
As teachers read the original nonfiction book What Should We Build?, there is guidance for what to do before, during, and after reading aloud.
Focused Language & Literacy
Gather children into small groups for language and literacy. Use Intentional Teaching Experience LL23, “Playing With Environmental Print,” to help children develop their understanding of print concepts.

It’s time for a body break! Mighty Minutes 281, “Up & Down,” offers simple tips for a playful activity that gets little learners up and moving.
Large-Group Roundup
Wrap up the day with a class reflection. Encourage children to share the progress they made on their buildings during choice time, such as the windows and doors they added and what the inside includes.
