STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics) serves as an integrative approach to teaching that allows children to explore, question, research, create, and discover. During this 6-hour session, participants will examine the many facets of STEAM and explore its connection to the objectives for development and learning. Educators will learn how to integrate science and technology throughout the day and will discover how in-depth, project-based investigations support STEAM learning in the transitional kindergarten classroom. Participants will unpack strategies for teaching children about physical science, life science, the earth and the environment, and, through hands-on interactive activities, explore the four steps of the engineering design process. Users of The Creative Curriculum® for Transitional Kindergarten will also learn how Teaching Guides and the Daily Resources help support STEAM planning. Participants will discuss the importance of family partnerships and learn how gather information from families that can inform responsive teaching practices. To strengthen the planning process, participants will examine how high-quality documentation can enhance responsive planning and promote young children’s growth and development. Finally, teachers and caregivers will practice using The Creative Curriculum® for Infants, Toddlers & Twos planning forms, and users of The Creative Curriculum® Cloud will practice creating individual and group plans within the Teach area.

Participants will also examine the essential components of the IFSP and IEP and will learn how to align IEP goals with the objectives for development and learning. Throughout the session, administrators will discuss strategies for leading collaborative teams that support the learning and development of children with disabilities. Finally, to communicate the importance of inclusion to families and other stakeholders, session participants will draft inclusion statements for their programs.

During this 1-day session, participants will explore their role in promoting the healthy social-emotional development of infants, toddlers, and twos. Participants will discover practical strategies for building a positive relationship with each child and strategies for promoting positive relationships between and among children. In addition, caregivers will explore and practice implementing a variety of strategies for fostering strong family partnerships. Participants will be introduced to developmentally appropriate expectations for children’s behaviors and will learn how to leverage positive guidance strategies. Caregivers and teachers will also discuss practices for navigating challenging behaviors, such as biting and temper tantrums.
